In April 2019, many set foot in the park for the first time. Even before it was closed in 2011, the Hermann von Siemens Sports Park was not open to all Munich residents – Siemens AG had used it as a company sports facility for its employees. But at some point the group no longer had any interest in the site, which then remained cordoned off for years and fell into disrepair. In 2017, the state capital finally acquired the park, after which the building department started the repair work: paths had to be mended, trees and shrubs cut, meadows leveled and sown, and last but not least, many benches and sports equipment were showing their age.
Now the people of Munich have 7.3 hectares of recreational space at their disposal – a little more than half of the entire park. Among other things, visitors can enjoy a triple sports hall and many outdoor sports facilities – with a fitness course, a running track, a playground and a bocce ball alley. At the same time, the valuable forest and green areas remain for all nature lovers. ‘In the city, but far from intense lights. Easily accessible via the U-bahn (U3 Aidenbachstr. or Obersendling). Safe, and open all year round.’
