Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is located 5 miles (8 km) south of Gunnison, Colorado. The recreation area includes over 8,000 acres of public land jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the city of Gunnison, Colorado, and Gunnison County. Hartman Rocks has miles of trails and roads maintained by the BLM and local Gunnison recreation groups. The area receives heavy visitation by a variety of recreationists including hikers, mountain bikers, vehicle recreationists, shooters, horseback riders, skiers, rock climbers and more. An EarthSky visitor says, “It’s vast, and most visit during the day. Camping is allowed. There is always room to get away from people and light.”

Deborah Byrd created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Prior to that, she had worked for the University of Texas McDonald Observatory since 1976, and created and produced their Star Date radio series. Today, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of this website. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named 3505 Byrd in her honor. In 2020, she won the Education Prize from the American Astronomical Society, the largest organization of professional astronomers in North America.
