Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is located 5 miles (8 km) south of Gunnison, Colorado. The recreation area includes over 8,000 acres of public land jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the city of Gunnison, Colorado, and Gunnison County. Hartman Rocks has miles of trails and roads maintained by the BLM and local Gunnison recreation groups. The area receives heavy visitation by a variety of recreationists including hikers, mountain bikers, vehicle recreationists, shooters, horseback riders, skiers, rock climbers and more. An EarthSky visitor says, “It’s vast, and most visit during the day. Camping is allowed. There is always room to get away from people and light.”
