Castillos de Galvez

The centuries-old Galvez Castle is an ancient castle in a state of major ruin, with only three castle pillars left standing, but offers night sky enthusiasts a secluded observation site just 66 miles (107 km) southwest of Madrid, Spain. Not much is known about the history of this castle, but it is believed to have been built around the 13th century and abandoned in the 16th century. Apparently, there was at one time a town around it. Please note that while this is not an official stargazing spot, one EarthSky reader says it “is relatively easy to access, very secure, and in addition to the great castle scenery, it is easy to see the stars at night.” Camping is not available at the castle, however both primitive and developed camping sites are available at the nearby Camping El Greco camping facility.
