El Morro National Monument

El Morro National Monument is located 140 miles (225 km) west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. El Morro was first designated as a national monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Located on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, the monument preserves an ancient pueblo inscription panels left behind by centuries of explorers and travelers. El Morro was named an International Dark Sky Park in December 2019. Its secluded location 40-50 miles from the closest cities gives overnight campers a view of clear, dark and dramatic skies. Check the park’s calendar for stargazing events.
