Camp Kilohana
Camp Kilohana is located on Saddle Road, the road between the two large volcanoes of the island. It is 10 miles (16 km) from the Waimea side junction, and 44 miles (71 km) from Hilo. The 6.8-acre (2.8 hectares) camp is a great site for meetings, retreats, stargazing, or just studying nature. The camp is mainly used for girl scout camps but other groups can book it too. Nearby points of interest include the Nene Goose Sanctuary and Onizuka Center of Astronomy (Hale Pohaku) halfway up Mauna Kea. A fellow EarthSky stargazer wrote: “Kilohana is a beautiful field with a view of Mauna Loa leading to the ocean. It is not too cold. Sometimes the marine inversion layer gets in the way, but it’s usually clear. The grass field is easy to acces and there are almost never any cars or lights!”
