Beuren is a small inner-city village located in the district of Esslingen in Baden-Württemberg of southern Germany with a variety of tourist accommodations and a reasonably dark sky, just 28 miles (44 km) southwest of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Hotels, vacation lodges, and campgrounds are all available within the municipality and in neighboring cities. However while a beautiful destination for casual gazing, Beuren is not recommended for serious observations. It is also called a “natural spa” for its pristine lakes and green pastures, home to a sky of which one EarthSky reader calls “perfect to stargaze when not cloudy.”
Deborah Byrd created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Today, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of this website. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named 3505 Byrd in her honor. A science communicator and educator since 1976, Byrd believes in science as a force for good in the world and a vital tool for the 21st century. "Being an EarthSky editor is like hosting a big global party for cool nature-lovers," she says.
