Mount Ainos National Park

Mount Ainos National Park is located on Kefalonia Island in the Ionian Sea. It is the only national park situated on a Greek Island. The park stretches over 3,000 hectares (7400  acres) and its highest peak is Megas Soros that reaches 1,628 m (5,340  feet). Mt. Ainos was first declared a national park in 1962 and houses the heart of Kefalonia’s biodiversity. As the island’s most precious reserve, it is popular for hiking and is extinguished by a single, endemic, species of fir called Abies Cephalonica, which grows  between 600-1,600 metres (1,970-5,250  feet).  As well, you may encounter small semi-wild horses, mainly at the south east side of the mountain. A friend of the EarthSky community said: “As a National Forest it provides everyone with an amazing quiet environment with no excessive and disturbing lights. In other words, ideal stargazing conditions.”
