A male Anna's Hummingbird that lives in our yard. The images show the color changes of the same hummingbird at different angles of sunlight. It takes the slightest turn of its head to show a flash of iridescent magenta. This is due to the way the feather microstructure reflects light differently as the viewing angle changes. During courtship displays, he reveals this shocking pink magenta colors to female spectators by orienting toward the sun.
Anna's hummingbird is common on the Pacific Coast and the only species of hummingbird to stay all winter in the area.
