Image Details:

These hydrogen alpha images of our nearest star reveal several large sunspots and a number of very impressive filaments, which are masses of plasma held above the surface of the sun by tubes of magnetism. The inverted image on the right, in which the sunspots are white, give the filaments more of a 3-dimensional appearance.
