This year, the state of West Bengal, along with other parts of the country, has seen a huge surge in the numbers of lightning. This number has been steadily rising for the past few years. Meteorologists and scientists are pointing at global warming and pollution behind this surge. While global warming is causing more water vapours in the atmosphere (leading to the formation of more cumulonimbus clouds), pollution is acting as a catalyst for cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. On 8th June 2021, West Bengal alone recorded death of 26 people due to lightning strikes.
