Very Young Moon Setting
On the evening of Saturday 17th October, the very thin young (23 hour old) Moon was observed setting to the west of Mutare under poor seeing conditions due to low level atmospheric haze above distant hills behind Chikanga West Township. The very thin crescent first appeared in the camera viewfinder at 6.10 pm twenty minutes after sunset and became visible to the naked eye at 6.20 pm (first image in mosaic). It then descended into thickening haze before disappearing again a short distance above the horizon at 6.35. It was the long interval of fading twilight between the Sun and Moon setting that enabled this very young Moon to be seen.
