Waning Crescent Moon with crepuscular rays and sunrise arch.
A cloudless sky at dawn on Tuesday allowed the Waning Crescent Moon to be observed rising above some hills in Cecil Kop Nature Reserve before becoming overwhelmed by a magnificent display of sunrise crepuscular rays, a bright sunrise stratospheric aerosol arch and then the sun itself appearing close by. The accompanying pictures, which were taken from first light until the sun rose, show the old five percent illuminated Crescent Moon first rising alone and then some distance above the planet Mercury which appeared above the horizon at 5.21 am. The two continued upwards but Mercury only remained visible for about twenty minutes while being engulfed by a fan of upwards propagating brightly colored sunrise crepuscular rays leaving the Moon to gradually disappear into the bright glare of a broad growing sunrise arch.
