I'm sure that our Community friends in the Southern Hemisphere are very familiar with this view of the Southern Milky Way. The "False Cross" is often confused with the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross, like the Big Dipper can be used to find cardinal directions. But the False Cross points to the SW, not the South. Ancient mariners mistakenly used this asterism to go to Argentina, but ended up in Atlantic City, N. J., where they lost all of their money. To be honest, I too mistook this for the Southern Cross when I first moved to the Tropics. But thankfully I did not end up in New Jersey.
