Jupiter, airplane, lunar halo over Manila January 13

We knew something was up yesterday when we got thousands of hits to an article about lunar halos. It was a lunar halo seen in Asia.

We heard from many friends in the Philippines that a beautiful lunar halo was shining in yesterday evening’s sky (January 13, 2014). Our friend Jv Noriega in Manila, who has contributed many wonderful photos to EarthSky, posted this shot of last night’s lunar halo enclosing both an airplane in flight and the planet Jupiter.

We’ve seen many lunar halo photos, but none more beautiful than this one! Thank you, Jv!

By the way, Jupiter will be even closer to the moon tonight (January 14), as seen from around the world. Halo or no halo, don’t miss it!

What makes a halo around the sun or moon?

Close pairing of the moon and Jupiter on January 14
