Set against the dramatic Sacramento Mountains, this park features an historic ranch house, quiet camping in the Chihuahuan Desert, and the unique oasis of pools of water under the cottonwood trees of Dog Canyon. Enjoy a short walk on the Riparian Nature Trail or a challenging hike up the Dog Canyon Trail. Park elevation is 4,400 feet (1,341 meters). It is 16 miles (26 km) from the nearest town, and away from light pollution. Also, a local astronomy group – the Amateur Astronomers Group of Alamogordo, New Mexico – hosts monthly star parties there.
