dataflowc,
You are absolutely right. What really bugs me are all these things and it end up perpetuating this bad idea of science. BTW, here is a great short video piece by Neil deGrasse Tyson:

What bugs me in 99% of space movies is they always have gravity with no explanation of how it is achieved. Sounds in space when there is no air. Also they always show space to be two dimensional with an up and a down, space fighters always behave like airplanes in a dog fight. Other general things that irritate me in the movies are fight scenes when one punch will knock the bad guy out cold for the whole scene (a professional knockout in boxing is only to the count of 10). Also every single gun shot muzzle flashes, making guns look more like flame throwers.

Linda, these are just the most prominent errors. I've seen several in the week or two since I wrote this. The one that most sticks in my mind is a moon supposedly late at night that was obviously at a phase and in a position that could only be seen in broad daylight. A lot of people feel that this is just being picky or pedantic, but I think that these kinds of errors are sadly indicative of our disconnection from -- and even disrespect for -- nature.

I'm so glad you mentioned these inaccuracies. What really bugs me is when they get the phase wrong, like showing a crescent moon at the zenith.

Don, I'm afraid I'm not sure what you are asking. Please clarify. What do you mean? Are you asking where it is in the sky each night, what constellation its in.... what?
