The huge asteroid 2005 YU55 will sweep closely past the Earth – missing us by 319,000 kilometers (about 200,000 miles) – tomorrow. It’ll be the closest known passage of an asteroid this big – but there was an even closer passage to Earth of this same asteroid in 1976, which went undetected. This time, astronomers spotted it ahead of time. Does it make you feel safer – or more vulnerable? I’m not sure how it makes me feel!
On this November 8, 2011 passage, 2005 YU55 will come closer than the moon’s distance from Earth, but it will not strike Earth or the moon.
The time of closest passage will be November 8 at 5:28 p.m. CST (23:28 UTC).
The asteroid is 1,300 feet (400 meters) wide. In contrast, the moon is 3,476 kilometers wide. That’s 3,476,000 meters for the moon’s diameter in contrast to 400 meters for YU55. That’s why you don’t need to worry about YU55 raising tides on Earth, or causing earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis. It’s big for an asteroid, but much much smaller than our moon.
2005 YU55 will reach a visual brightness of 11th magnitude. That’s very faint for most of us. The asteroid will be visible only to amateur or professional astronomers as it plunges past us and moves on.
How to see 2005 YU55 when it passes Earth on November 8 and 9
NASA in final preparations for large asteroid flyby November 8
Known asteroids come close pretty often. To prove it to yourself, check out this link to passages of near-Earth asteroids in November 2011, from Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Space Calendar. An “AU” is an Earth-sun distance, by the way, or about 93 million miles (150 million km).
Asteroids also come within the moon’s distance every so often, but 2005 YU55 is the biggest known asteroid to do so for about the next 17 years, until the year 2028. Still, the asteroid 2005 YU55 poses no immediate threat to Earth. Its orbit is well known to astronomers – so well known that we can rule out an impact for at least the next century.
According to NASA’s Near Earth Object Program:
Although classified as a potentially hazardous object, 2005 YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over at least the next 100 years. However, this will be the closest approach to date by an object this large that we know about in advance and an event of this type will not happen again until 2028 when asteroid (153814) 2001 WN5 will pass to within 0.6 lunar distances.
The animation below, from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, shows this asteroid’s sweep past Earth on November 8 and 9.
Click here to expand image above
In this animated diagram, Earth appears at the center, with the diagonal line representing Earth’s orbit around the sun. The moon is shown orbiting Earth, and you can see that the path of YU55 carries the asteroid inside the moon’s orbit. The imagine the scale, remember that the moon’s orbit is roughly 770,000 kilometers (475,000 miles) wide. YU55 will miss Earth by 319,000 kilometers (about 200,000 miles) – a nice safe margin.

Asteroid 2005 YU55 in April 2010. (Arecibo Radar Telescope)
Robert McMillan of the Spacewatch Program near Tucson, Arizona discovered YU55 on December 28, 2005. It appears to be a very dark, nearly spherical object.
The closest approach to Earth and the moon will be respectively 0.00217 AU and 0.00160 AU on 2011 November 8 at 23:28 UTC (5:28 p.m. CST) and November 9 at 07:13 UTC (1:13 a.m. CST).
I remember in the 1970s when astronomers were speculating that the Tunguska event in Russia in 1908 was probably caused by a small comet striking Earth. That event – in a remote part of Siberia – killed reindeer and flattened many miles of forest, but essentially did little harm. In the 1970s, the consciousness was just arising that objects in space might strike us. Astronomers began programs to watch for near-Earth asteroids, and it was inevitable that they would find some passing as closely as 2005 YU55 will on November 8.
One of the first programs to watch for near-Earth asteroids, by thew way, was Spacewatch – founded in 1980 by Robert McMillan, who discovered this asteroid 2005 YU55. Spacewatch did what it was supposed to do! It found an asteroid sweeping near us. Presumably, if an asteroid is ever headed straight for us, we’ll have some advance warning. But let me emphasize that 2005 YU55 is not a doomsday asteroid. So relax, everyone.
Bright object near moon November 7 is Jupiter, not 2005 YU55
Bottom line: The huge asteroid 2005 YU55 will sweep within the moon’s distance from Earth on November 8, 2011. Its orbit is well known to astronomers, and it will not strike Earth or the moon. 2005 YU55 is the largest asteroid ever known to sweep this closely to Earth. There is no danger. It will not raise tides, or cause earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis. Both amateur and professional are very curious about this close asteroid passage, which they will be watching with telescopes.

Today Oct 8, 2011 Meteor Shower. Nov 8, 2011 Asteriod.
This will be a very close call i pray it is only that. Discovered on December 28, 2005 by Robert McMillan of the Spacewatch Program A potentially hazardous Asteroid known as 2005 YU55.
This Asteroid some what Large 400 meter-sized type – C, will pass by the Earth right between our moon and Earth. On November 8, 2011.
The people on Earth have not seen a Asteroid of this size in advance. One this big Has not impacted Earth in over at least 4 thousand years.
Most Objects that have a diameters over 45 meters or 147.637 ft strike the Earth approximately once every thousand years or so. Lying flat everything for hundreds of miles. Like the TUNGUSKA 1908 SIBERIA, RUSSIA CRASH OR Tunguska Explosion. This one did not even hit the Earth with its full Impact, it burst high in the air above the ground plowing it apart into many smaller parts. Making thousands of very deep holes in the Russian forests. Many of them in dense forest far from any roads or towns.
One 400 Meters 1,312.3 ft in diameter like this one YU55 would if impacted Earth on land would darken all of the Earth not for just days but much longer.
It would change the weather not seen on Earth in over thousands of years a massive climate change to say the least.
The World and NASA will watch this one very closely.

Can anybody tell what the speed of the asteroid 2005 YU55?
The “Close-Approach Data” table here shows the speed at ~13.5 km/s.
http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2005%20YU55;orb=1;cov=0;log=0;cad=1
~13.5 km/sec = ~30,200 mph = ~Mach 39.67
oHandra medh,
Possibly ramming speed…. ;-)
How can NASA and other astronomers be a hundred percent certain that this won’t hit earth mistakes could be made I am sure.
Debra, because NASA and astronomers generally have spent 60 years now becoming expert at this type of thing … since the launch of the first satellite Sputnik in 1959. They are good enough at it that they could send people to the moon and bring them back and land them in the ocean – near a waiting ship. There is very strict physics governing the motions of objects in space. They know. The asteroid will not hit Earth.
Don’t worry,
Deborah
Yes, but while NASA are telling the public there is nothing to worry about, they are sending messages to the NASA families to be prepared for tsunamis, earthquakes and EMP’s.\
Yes, it may be a general preparedness warning, but its timing is a little coincidental I would think.
I personally don’t trust anything that NASA says because they have been proven to be liars by many scientists the globe over.
I would rather trust a scientist than anything NASA spits out.
In the movie Deep Impact they make it perfectly clear what their response would be to a meteor heading for the Earth… they wouldn’t tell the public because that would cause mass panic that they can’t control and that wouldn’t do anyone favours in the end…. rioting… looting etc would def be a factor because people in panic mode will do anything… so believe me when I say….
If YU55 is going to impact Earth…. NASA won’t tell you jack.
In the movie???
Seriously, youre argument is basef off a fictional moviee??
invalid.
Has a point I mean they couldnt tell where the school bus size sat was going to fall how can they accurately predict this and if so would they tell us in advanced… We still dont know where that sat fell
I agree , i’m trained in FEMA s CERT program and in conversations with FEMA personal off the record they are worried more about panic and rioting and more important people not paying their bills . They wont tell you till they cant hide it any more , so the warning is out , wont hurt to get prepaired and stock up on food and water and a 12 gauge to protect what others will want to take from you.
Why are people saying on the Internet that the asteroid will hit earth and that’s why they are doing a FEMA alert test in america on the ninth of November to tell people that they will be hit it is actually starting to worry me.
If there is indeed a FEMA test on November 9, that is a coincidence. Don’t believe everything the Internet says.
Thanks for clearing that up there is a bit too much rubbish going around on the Internet about this and elenin. What time in the uk will it be visible and how long will observers be able to see it.
Debra, it won’t be visible to the eye at all. But observers with small telescopes will be able to track its motion in front of the background stars for several days. A good site to learn more about telescopic observations is skyandtelescope.com …
All the best!
Deborah
Thanks I will have a look at that
To everyone worried about the asteroid YU55.
I would first like to address the fact that NASA and the Government is told to keep information from that public that would cause mass panic or anything of the sort, Simply because of that reason. So by CHANCE if the asteroid was going to hit, We wouldn’t know until after the fact.
Now keep in mind that NASA has been wrong before when it comes to calculations, so i would suggest you take a look at this before you do anything else.
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread773044/pg
This guy seems spot on. (Not saying i know much about AU’s and lunar distances)
After reading that i want to say that i don’t think that it will impact earth. Even if it get’s within 3,000 miles as shown in the above link, the velocity it’s traveling at SHOULD (key-word) project it past earth as expected.
With that being said i also want to stress that you should always be prepared. NEVER just brush it off like some people (Deborah) ;)
I wonder what kind of effects we would feel “if” it struck the moon? the animation does show that it is/will be nowhere near the moon, buti just wonder though if like if the Earths gravity changed the speed of the asteroid …it it would possibly hit our moon.
Yes, Earth’s gravity can change the speed and direction of an asteroid, but those who have calculated this asteroid’s path – for example, astronomers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who made the video above – have taken that into account.
If an asteroid of this size hit the moon, it would not affect Earth. Asteroids do sometimes strike the moon, as they do sometimes strike Earth. I would not want to minimize that possibility. I’m only saying that this asteroid will not strike Earth, and, in fact, no known asteroid will strike Earth at least within the next several decades, at least. There’s always a chance an unknown asteroid will strike Earth, however. That’s why astronomers keep an eye out.
All the best, and thanks for visiting!
Deborah
hello there, my name is john and im very interested in seeing this asteroid on november 8th. now im not used to the acronyms for the time zones but can anyone email me the time the asteroid yu55 is supposed to enter our sights on november 8th. i live in U.S. central standard time.
John, the asteroid will not ever enter our sights – at least not those of us using the eye alone.
Astronomers with telescopes will be able to see it … they can see it now …
Thanks for visiting!
Deborah
The people posting about a possible earth strike are like me. We are not experts, but we are concerned. We saw Shoemaker – Levy-9 break up due to Jupiters gravity and strike the planet. It is not movie magic that has us concerned. It is the science we see from astronomers and the constant reminder that we don’t have enough people watching these things.
Forsure earths gravity will pull this twds us.it wont impact land but an ocean which one idk.its written in rev 8 10.
Its a 1/4 of a mile wide enuff for a cpl of decades of fallout.99% gone and 1% lives on to dominate and oppress its future 99%ters all over again.n they know the secret ingredient to brainwashthe 99% celebrity cult, overpaid overglorified ball players, technological advancements, hopes of becoming rich lottery money tv shows, trends, drugs etc etc
I did not think gravity would be able to pull this as smaller ones have not been pulled in that have came much closer to us. If it did hit how much damage could it do it is no where near the size of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs
Debra, you’re correct. The Earth’s gravity will not pull this asteroid close enough to us to hit us.
It’s possible for an asteroid to strike Earth – but not this asteroid at this time.
Thanks for visiting!
Deborah
Boy the conspiracy theorists are out in force on this one :-) .
Folks interested in knowing which known asteroids might impact the earth should look here:
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/
This lists all the known objects that cross earth orbit, including estimated orbital elements and assigns a Torino and Palermo risk rating.
The bottom of the page explains the Torino and Palermo risk scales.
These risks are posted within a very short period of time of the discovery of the object, hours or days. And updated and more importantly refined as astronomers can get more instruments on the object. Each close look as the objects come back into earth’s neighborhood results in further refinements and reassessment of the Torino rating.
A Torino 1 rating, which 3 of them still carry, means that we have not accumulated enough observation information about their orbits to completely rule out an impact within the next 100 years. These will likely fall to zero over time as more and closer observation data is collected. Objects may carry a Torino 1 rating for several years as astronomers wait for the object to come back around its orbit for another close look.
Objects carrying a Torino 0 rating (all the rest) have absolutely no possibility of an impact within the next 100 years. The 100 year limit is imposed because 1) it is difficult to project orbits with sufficient precision over longer periods and 2) a 100 year warning ought to be adequate to plan a response to the threat.
When objects orbits are sufficiently understood that we know any possible threat is far beyond 100 years they go to the removed list:
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/removed.html
YU55 is very safely relegated to the removed list.
This asteroid set the record for highest Torino rating, and got a lot of media attention in the mid 90s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis
Of all known asteroids, we are perfectly certain all offer no near term threat except for 3 of them.
The time will come soon when all on Earth will look to the Heavens above.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL THAT LIVE BY THE SEA OR OCEAN SHORE AT 1 FOOT TO 50 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL. Or with in ten miles of the coast. World Wide.

Asteroids in our Asteroid Belt that is between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars do have collisions and some do turn into meteoroids many in the past thousands of years have come into the Earth’s Atmosphere. Many of thousands of them make it into Meteorites the signs are all over the Earth, craters of all sizes.
Now Earth going through a Debris Field or Tail of a Comet or large Asteroid at almost the same time as Asteroid YU55 near Earth Miss? Debris fields some times are very Large to say the least.
The World and NASA will watch Outer Space very closely the next 30 days.
Most likely more Earthquakes and the Oceans Tide will be strongly affected just from a near miss. The Gravitational Effects from outer space will most likely effect Earth for days.
Let us all pray
this is just a near Earth miss or NEO (Near Earth Object) or Near Earth Orbit.

Here are a few facts to consider:
1. YU55 is spherical in shape ( very unusual for a “meteor”) and it is headed our way.
2. The events of the past several years and months point to the fact that what happens in space has an effect on what happens on Earth, (i.e., earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos)
3. A large spherical foreign object will enter our orbit and pass between Earth and the Moon next week. This has not happened in our lifetime.
4. NASA and the United States Government are not likely to give us advance warning of an ELE (extinction level event) or anything that puts a hault to our fragile economy or business as usual.
5. The Earth’s magnetic poles are not holding in place.
6. There are warnings being posted of tsunami’s, meteor showers, volcanos and earthquakes throughout the world next week.
7. There will be a Emergency Broadcast Advisory next week – the first of it’s kind ever!
7. Humans are not the only intelligent life in the universe.
I’m no astrophysicist – but I know enough about mechanics and motion to say that I trust the NASA guys when they predict the trajectory of an object mobing through space. Relatively speaking, there are pretty simple equations that govern the motion of objects in a vacuum and the effects of gravity on their trajectory.
Once something enters the atmosphere I would say that all bets are off though – like when a sattelite falls to earth – then there must be so many additional variables that accuracy falls like a rock (pun intended).
Chris
Chris, thank you … that’s a wise and insightful comment …
From today’s paper: Amateur astrologers will need at least a 6-inch or larger telescope to see 2005 YU55. And unless we know exactly where to look, we won’t be seeing it – it is, after all, a rather large sky. So – does anyone know where to look?? Thanks, Karen
up
well apprently it can not been seen by the naked eye you konw in other words you need a proper telescope tbh they say it aint a threat so im sure they tell the truth theyll have to and app its gonna go by so quick so ??
like i say im worried but sure evreything will be fine im sure its happend a few times b4

Where over the earth will 2005 YU55 flight pattern be and from which direction. I live in SW Washington state and would like to know where to be looking and at what time on the 8th and the 9th.
hi my names gemma tbh i belive nasa coz no matter how bad things are they gotta tell us the truth the absolute truth right its basicly the law and what they r supose to do watch the earth and stuff ??
plus surely tbh if this asteroid is not visable to the naked eye it carnt be that close to earth ?
tbh im worried but im sure it will be fine
=]
Well, I read all these comments. For sure its something to be worried about. When I found out last week about this 2005 YU55 its was from the 24heures.ch Its a site from Switzerland. They were saying that from the 4th of November 2011 NASA will commence to track closely 2005 YU55 at 16:30 Swiss time and 10:30 in Washington. Now I have been checking the news from all different site and nobody talks about it. I just has to go and check with NASA.
Make sure that you have enough water. Can food, money, and warm clothes. And a good lantern that will last for many days. Because being in the card for a very long time is very scary.
We all hope for the best.
Correction type errors.
Because being in the dark for a long time is very scary.
Has anyone thought that maybe it could hit the moon.. ? crush that and our tides are stuffed.
Not possible to “crush” the moon with a 400 meter wide rock. The moon is 3,500 Km wide. It’s like throwing a baseball at a Mack truck. You might dent the doorpanel, but you will not obliterate it, no matter how hard you throw it….
debbie this is a queston for you really i mean nasa would deffo know right the act space it is away from earth im quite worried i know theres peple on the internet who like to wind people up or morbid people that want the world to end !!
i mean would we act die ??
and im worrying bout nothing right i mean if its not visable to the naked eye it crnt be that close
=/
Gemma Louise, please don’t be worried. In our business, we hear people say “this will be the end of the world!” nearly every day … and so far, the world is still here.
Yes, NASA knows the path of this asteroid.
No, it will not strike Earth, or the moon.
Yes, asteroids sometimes do pass between the Earth and the moon’s orbit. I don’t have the date for the last such passage in my memory, but I do recall it happening before … a few years ago? It happens with regularity.
What’s different now is that we have an Internet with a great deal of true and false information on it. People want to scare other people, or they are scared themselves. I don’t know why. (P.S. I’m not scared)
Yes, we are all going to die someday – but very likely NOT in a global cataclysm – and definitely NOT FROM THIS ASTEROID. Very likely, the world will keep spinning along, and our earthly problems will remain for us to solve.
Don’t worry!
Deborah

› More info Asteroid 2005 YU55 is one of about 8,500 near-Earth objects to be catalogued to date. What makes this space rock special is that its orbital path carries it safely past Earth within the moon’s orbit in early November 2011. The trajectory of 2005 YU55 is well understood. At the point of closest approach, it will be no closer than 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers), or 0.85 the distance from the moon to Earth. The last time a space rock as big as 2005 YU55 came as close to Earth was in 1976, although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. The next known approach of an asteroid this large will be in 2028.
this makes me feel better thankyou for your info im still alil worried but ive known its happend b4 and theres no way earths gravity force or whatever could act pull it alot closer ??
iam glad i wont be able to see it or id be terryified =/ pku theres no metion of it hitting us so sure thats good yeah ??

Yes, it’s good. It won’t hit us!
Is it dangerous for the 10.000 manmade objects (satellites etc) that going around the earth? How possible is a crash between the asteroid and some satellite?
[...] More sum about asteroid 2005 YU55 [...]
Shut up its gonna hit you dont no anything nasa talk crap
i dont think nasa talk crap they been doing this for years jus coz all you losers think it will jus coz its close to us !! dnt b stuoid anyway i belive em overwise it wuld b on news =]
PASADENA, Calif. — NASA’s Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, Calif. has captured new radar images of Asteroid 2005 YU55 passing close to Earth.
The asteroid safely will safely fly past our planet slightly closer than the moon’s orbit on Nov. 8. The last time a space rock this large came as close to Earth was in 1976, although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. The next known approach of an asteroid this size will be in 2028.
Gemma Louise, you are absolutely right. What purpose would be served by NASA staying quiet if they knew an asteroid were approaching? To delay “panic” while letting millions die? The idea is ridiculous!
If an asteroid were headed for Earth, NASA would tell us. I have absolute faith.
Plus it’s not just NASA. There are hundreds if not thousands of astronomers all over the globe aware of and potentially watching this asteroid …
Deborah
Why worry. Where and how would you hide? Might as well go on with life.
Well Deborah,
If you think NASA would warn us all of imminent danger then think again, it’s an Agency under the guide of the Government. If they were REALLY worried about the rest of us then they would have also sent us their “preparedness” instruction and not just the NASA “family”.
There is far too much ambiguity surrounding this anomaly, the dimensions of 2005:YU55 were recently changed and yet the trajectory remained constant? What about the gravitational adjustments? Why weren’t these fed in? We are talking about thousands of tonnes here, that would alter the trajectory due to the Earth-Moon gravitational leverage. Get ready!!!!!
Jane, where are you getting this information? Who says that “preparedness” instructions were sent to the NASA “family?” I would like to hear your source on that.
There’s no anomaly here. Just an asteroid doing what asteroids do – moving in its orbit around the sun. Yes, it’s coming near us. Yes, it’s a sobering event, to think of such a large object coming so near. But November 8 will come and go – like all the other “doomsday” dates – I’ve seen dozens of them come and go in my lifetime – and yet we’re still here.
2005 YU55 will pass between us and the moon’s orbit. It’s scary to think of it coming so close! But it will not strike – this time. Think of this object’s name. The 2005 means it was discovered in the year 2005. If a strike were going to happen, scientists would ahve known about it for years. There would have been plenty of time to prepare.
A strike is not in the cards for this asteroid, today.
Deborah
If Nasa is so sure that it will be a “near miss” then why was it originally announced as a “potential catastrophic event”? And why do they need to constantly “track” it, will it alter?
Since the asteroid, which is hard to gauge since it is coming from the direction of the Sun, was recently considered by NASA as being 580 ft wide was suddenly/recently changed to over 1312 ft – why haven’t they changed its trajectory since the increase in weight would lead to significant impact on it’s gravitational pull? Is their math right?
Why is there so much ambiguity surrounding this asteroid?
Why are the media covering it worldwide – with the exact same information?
Why did the Russian Government “suddenly” order “5000″ bunkers to be built in Moscow earlier this year?
Why does Google have a big red X on Google Earth between Russia and Alaska?
Why on the second day the asteroid is due to “pass” is FEMA and Homeland Security taking hold of all USA access to radio-wave frequencies (all TV broadcasts and Radio broadcasts) in order to make an emergency drill announcement – and for the first time EVER? http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=55722
Why have UNESCO, also on the same day just produced a document for a “Pacific-wide” emergency Tsunami warning “drill” coming out of the Russia-Alaska area and pushing down towards Eastern Australia and South America?
http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0021/002114/211498e.pdf
Why in the UNESCO “Drill Alert” is the word “impact” used when “earthquakes” is what causes Tsunami’s pretty much all the time?
Some are asking is there any irony in the date the asteroid is due in on 11/9/11?
Why did NASA, just a few months ago, send out a broadcast and an email to all of their employees and their families to have an “emergency preparedness” plan and supplies ready “in case”? Even to protect pets! They’ve never done this before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyKopmPV0PQ
Finally, since something like this has not happened in all of our “lifetimes” then how do we really know what “gravitational” impact will occur? Hence all the emergency preparedness, drills etc.
Jane,
I don’t know about the things you’re talking about and can’t verify their accuracy. So let me stick to the things I do know – your first and last statements. NASA never announced this as a “potential catastrophic event.” They might have called it a “potentially hazardous asteroid” because – so it is. Its orbit brings it near Earth, again and again. It will not strike us this time. But in the future, yes, there is a possibility that this asteroid, or some other asteroid, will strike. That’s one reason NASA and other astronomers (they’re not ALL with NASA, some are with universities) track asteroids. Also, they track them because they’re curious about them! Objects in space are sources of great fascination to astronomers. That’s why they study them.
Your last statement – implying that perhaps scientists do not understand gravity. They do understand it. The law of gravity has been known for centuries. It’s described by unvarying mathematical equations. We send satellites into orbit – to other planets – we sent people to the moon and brought them back. Scientists understand gravity that well.
As to the rest of your message … as I said, I can’t verify what you say. I suspect there are some grains of truth to what you say. But perhaps there is also a large dose of exaggeration to this information, perpetuated perhaps by unscrupulous bloggers, who perhaps want you to come to their sites – perhaps because that way they get ad revenues from Google or other advertisers? I can only suspect that as a motive. I don’t know for sure.
I do know about science. I’ve written about it for 35 years. I believe what these astronomers are saying. November 8 will come and go, and the asteroid will not strike the Earth or the moon. But yes it’s important to track asteroids, because there is a possibility that – in the future – 100 years from now – or 1,000 years from now – or 1,000,000 miles from now – an asteroid could strike Earth.

Hello,
If Nasa is so sure that it will be a “near miss” then why was it originally announced as a “potential catastrophic event”?
John (hmm, this same email address and message was left under a different name in another post),
I don’t know about the things you’re talking about and can’t verify their accuracy.

[...] More sum about asteroid 2005 YU55 [...]
I seem to believe like others that there is a good chance that this asteroid could do us some damage. I mean really what are the odds they plan this big emergency broadcast on the same day this thing is coming by us ? !
I believe maybe we should go with our own instincts and those of us that know there is a chance of something happening get your family prepared ….just like those smart Nasa people are doing….we would be fools to believe the goverment would announce this information and cause such wide spread panic !
perfect timing YU55 I start a practical today on crater impact The students wil think I planned this!
Now what shall I do next week!!!!!
Definitely a tough act to follow!
Thanks for visiting.

Maybe this astroid is not on its own and a member of a swarm
If so, the other members of the swarm would have to be very tiny – or astronomers would have seen them.
il watches with my 15 inch dobson telescoop il hoop so .
A competitor website has posted information on 3 Deep Space Objects headed our way, to arrive in fall 2012. Can you vaildate or confirm any information on those 3 deep space objects? They have pictures of the objects and they appear to very, very large. Thanks
Follow this link to Skymap, load in the coordinates and see for yourself:
Coordinates
19 25 12 -89 46 03 – the first large object
16 19 35 -88 43 10 – a cylindrical object
02 26 39 -89 43 13 – the object as a circle
Due to the direction of their approach, Kasnov says that they will never been seen from the Northern Hemisphere, but that in the near future the three objects will be visible to residents in the Southern Hemisphere with the aid of only a decent telescope. It’s because of that, Kasnov feels, the attempts that will be made by NASA to try and cover up the existence of the objects will end up failing.
@ Deborah: After having worked for the Federal Government/Military for 40 years, I do not share your optomisim that ANY PART of government would tell us the truth.
In what direction of the sky do i look for the asteroid?
Is it going to be in the east, west, southeast, northern? Near the moon?
Ok i know where the big dipper and the little dipper are ..in regards to their location ..will the asteroid be to the north, south, east or west of the dippers?…just so i can get an idea in what direction to look with my telescope.

in relation to the big and little dippers….will it be near them, over, under,to the south, east, north or west of those?
Fellow people of earth.
if you wana stay alive go far away. the end is coming.
You will be asked a code on November 15. 2011. write it down and say it out loud to the heaven and you wuill be saved…… please don’t think this is a lie. i am tying yo help you the code is 666elbibyloh777saves. see you in the space ship.
Searching the net for images and information, and I’m starting to really get tired of reading, “not gonna hit earth”, “not doomsday”, etc…
All right all right, real facts now? Do we have any new images? What’s it made of? Real science! One line of anti-doomsday per article is enough!
This comment is not specifically aimed at this article, which is nicely put together. Rather aimed at the mass of junk filling the net when you search for real information! It’s almost as if we have more doomsday criers than scientists?!
the government lies. they all lie. they are killing us. they are causing all this crap!!! this is the government. SAVE YOURSELF. BEFORE IT’S TO LATE!!!!!
To the citizens of the Planet Earth. You have been warned by Van DA Huhnast Jr. Take head in what he has to say. For he speaks the TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH. Remember the code for you will be trialed and tested. It is up to you if you pass or not. Outer Space is not for the weak, but for only the strong.
Stand together Men! We will need all of our assets to defeat the inevitable.
Meet you on the Space Front.
If anyone believes NASA, the US government or any other government around the world would tell the public that an asteroid was going to impact the earth, you really need to give your head a shake. Just think about what could possibly happen around the world if people knew a 400 m wide asteroid was going to strike the earth? What would you do? With that being said I do not believe YU55 will impact the earth. The governments would keep a known impact totally hidden to the public. So if YU55 was going to hit earth I don’t believe it would have ever made the news.

Seriously, the world is ending – on the surface at least. We must retreat to the center of the Earth. It’s time to return to our subterranean roots! Who will join me?
Seriously, you’re going to argue about this? It will not hit the Earth, and if it did you wouldn’t be here to shove it in anyone’s face. Think about how many Astronomers there are.
Since we’re going to get into the whole “NASA is hiding something” then let me just state this:
There are Astronomers all over the world, not all of them can keep their mouths closed. They have families too. Don’t you think word would get out? Astronomers aren’t the only ones who can make accurate predictions about this asteroid either, think about all the Physicists and anyone doing anything that involves a little bit of advanced math. It’s not that difficult to figure it out it you have the right information.
Sorry to burst your end of the world theory.
God Bless you all.
