Ka’iulani Murphy is an apprentice navigator in the Polynesian Voyaging Society, the organization that brought Polynesian navigation back to Hawaii. Her teacher is Nainoa Thompson, who created the modern system of Hawaiian navigation, and went on the first voyage to Tahiti to reclaim Hawaii’s cultural traditions. Murphy has voyaging for 13 years.
