Harold Vinegar’s expertise is with heavy oil and bitumen, which are very thick and very heavy, making them difficult to extract from the ground. Dr. Vinegar is one of the principal inventors of Shell’s ‘in situ conversion’ processes, which involve upgrading oil while it is still in the ground. During his time with Shell he contributed to more than 50 external publications and earned around 150 patents across a variety of fields. Harold was with Shell for 32 years and retired on October 31, 2008. He is now affiliated with the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
