Chelle Gentemann studies ocean conditions using satellite data. Areas of her research include the thermal structure of the upper ocean, the effect of sea surface temperatures on tropical cyclones, and the variation of sea ice with climate. Her work involves a number of satellite instruments, including the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager, the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer – Earth observing system, and the Visible and Infrared Scanner. Dr. Gentemann is a member of several science teams, including the NASA Satellite Ocean Atlas Team and the NASA Physical Oceanography Data Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC).
