Carl Mesters – a Chief Scientist Chemistry and Catalysis for Shell – is an innovator and inventor of catalysts, which speed up chemical reactions in the making of everyday items. The process of catalysis is central to many technical processes, and Dr. Mesters’ work shows how long-term research can lead to the development of major new energy projects, such as Pearl GTL, a gas to liquids (GTL) plant based in Ras Laffan, Qatar. This plant, which will be the largest of its kind in the world, will convert natural gas into liquid petroleum products. Mesters’ work also helped create the fuel for the first diesel-powered car to win Le Mans 24.
