Beth Shapiro received a MacArthur Fellowship (the so-called genius grant) in 2009 for her work on tracing the population history of recently extinct or threatened species. She is an evolutionary biologist at Pennsylvania State University, and also studies the recent evolutionary history of fast-evolving RNA viruses. In 2007, Dr. Shapiro was on Smithsonian Magazine‘s list of outstanding American innovators under the age of 36.
