Planetary scientist Alan Stern leads research efforts to explore the outer reaches of our solar system. He has been principal investigator on a number of planetary and lunar missions, including the New Horizons Pluto-Kuiper Belt mission. The mission is on its way now and will reach Pluto and the Kuiper belt in 2015. Dr. Stern is Associate Vice President for the Southwest Research Institute, and was chief executive of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. In 2007, Dr. Stern was listed among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.
