Earth’s Changing Climate Proposal - NSF solicitation 11-546
In 2012-2016, in partnership with the GIS software leader ESRI, the American Geophysical Union, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Earth Science Teachers Association - and leading climate scientists and communicators on a special Climate Advisory Committee - EarthSky proposes to collaborate with U.S. scientists to present climate issues, while contributing to the informal science education infrastructure. EarthSky will implement, study efficacy via formative evaluations and improve a prototype of a new map-based website at climate.earthsky.org. Two full-scale versions of the website – one in English, one in Spanish - will pinpoint locations of climate change, and allow scientists to convey to the public clear information about climate research. These websites will use a form of geolocation - a map-based presentation, similar to that on Google Earth, but made possible by a voluntary contribution from ESRI - as a tool for conveying climate information. The websites will also contain news feeds and user-generated content. EarthSky – “a clear voice for science” - is an award-winning informal science education company that has worked with scientists since 1991 to produce stories for widely heard daily media broadcasts and the Internet.
