@debbe behnke
sorry for responding earlier ... i've not been seeing replies since just recently.

I used a lens that allows close-up focus. But I think you may be able to magnify a snowflake well with the 55-250 zoom, if you use a high ISO and plenty of illumination.

But seriously, i'm no expert ... i just played around with my camera and got those results. The real expert is Tom Niziol , check out his website, http://www.buffaloflakes.com/

I am anxious to try this. I have a 18-55mm, 50mm lens and 55-250mm lens. will my 50mm lens work for this? that is what I'll be trying first.

Thanks so much for posting this. Lovely work, and a lot of useful info for the day I get the macro lens and the energy to use it. Definitely a bookmark on this page; again, thank you.

I started with the same route descussed here but quickly expanded my photography of snow flakes. With some very basic equipment, I am able to do a lot. These may not be the best snow crystal photos on the web, but I am pretty happy what I was able to do for the investement. Go to www.buffaloflakes.com or search for "Mother Nature's Snow Flakes" on Facebook. Let me know what you think
