Quentin, thank you for letting us know! I went back through this script and changed all our “stinkbugs” to true-bug “stink bugs.” We hope you’ll come back often and help keep us accurate!

While common names are not regulated like scientific names, entomologists have long maintained a useful convention. If a bug is a true bug (Hemiptera) the common name is two words: stink bug. Thus clown or Eleodes beetles are known instead as stinkbugs since they are not bugs but Coleoptera. The same is true with true flies (house fly) vs. dragonfly or butterfly, which are not Diptera. A trivial point I confess, but Earth & Sky is a respected source of information and should promote not detract from this old tradition.
