I agree with Rob Dunn and take exception to Benjamin Napier's comments. Napier implies that action to reduce human-caused extinction can only be achieved by a communist, dictatorial political system. I prefer to believe that people can educate themselves about serious problems and then get together to find various ways to deal with them, which is why I am reading Earth & Sky instead of attending Tea Party protests or ranting about how liberals and environmentalists are covertly creating a communist, command economy.

Fearmongering. 99.0% of all species that have ever existed are extinct. And no human nor evil SUV had anything to do with their demise. Humans have had minimal effects o nthe climate and envronment of the earth. One volcano or one asteroid hit will do more damage in an instant that all of human activity put together. If, indeed we can call the effects of a "catastrophe" damage. Whatever killed out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago laid the groundwork for our existence.

Sustainibility is a buzzword for command economy. Communism is another word that will work. And the deaths associated with that will be human. There are always new species showing up and old ones going a way. Once in a while, there is a burst of radiation or other major event that changes things quickly. There is no evidence that humans are doing much of anything at all.

How do make industry, buisness and governments stop destroying and act sustainably?
Do we need to change the way money works?
If so, how?
What else can actualy be done?
